Construction Begins!

The first bowling green is an all-weather green, built to Greengauge all-weather system specifications. The base construction was carried out by a Cypriot construction firm and began in May 1995. By 18 May, the drainage pipes and first part of the base, consisting of various sizes of hard core, had been laid. By 4 June, the last of the hardcore was ready to be laid and the ditches were built. The final layer, approximately 2” porous bitumen, was completed by 6 June.(Figs. 5,6 & 7)

On 8 June, the carpet fitters from Greengauge arrived and they started work. They put down a layer of underfelt covered with strips of carpet approx. 4m wide and stitched together. This work was interrupted however, when a problem with the bitumen was discovered and a large portion had to be removed across what was then rink 5 and half of rink 4. This was filled with concrete and the problem initially appeared to be resolved but this was later found not to be the case and remedial work had to be carried out. However, the green was completed and ready for play by 13 June and the official opening took place on Saturday 1 July 1995.(Figs.8,9 & 10)
